The Dimplex Revillusion 25” electric fireplace log insert is a cleaner, cheaper and no-maintenance alternative to traditional wood and gas fireplaces.

The logs, embers and flames are very realistic. Combined with the supplemental heat from the integrated ceramic heater, the Revillusion feels just like a real fireplace.

This Dimplex insert is also really easy and quick to install (it’s a plug-in unit) – and, other than occasionally dusting the logs and base, it requires zero maintenance.

In my in-depth review below, I discuss the best features and limitations of the Dimplex Revillusion.

Features

Ultra-realistic Design

Dimplex Revillusion 25-Inc

Dimplex has gone to great lengths to make the Revillusion electric fireplace as realistic as possible.

The logs are cast from real hardwood logs. Everything from the shape to the grooves on their surface looks very real.

When you switch the fireplace on, the LED lights embedded in the logs create the appearance of smoldering wood. Even when you know they are not real, you may still find yourself afraid to touch the logs.

The flame effects are created by LED light being reflected off the Plexiglas backdrop at the back of the insert.

Dimplex has designed the flames such that they dance and flicker about randomly from different sections of the logs just like a real fire.

This creates the same relaxing ambiance as a real wood-burning fireplace.

To complete the full effect, the flames and logs are set on a base that looks like a fireplace grate. Below the grate, a faux ember bed creates the illusion of real burning bits of charcoal.

Versatile Display Settings

There are several display settings that let you change the fireplace ambiance. These settings are available both from the log insert itself and the included multi-function remote.

One of the things you can change is the flame base color. Options include yellow (the default), blue, yellow with 360o LEDs, and blue with 360o LEDs.

The 360o LED setting turns on extra LED lights that illuminate all around the fireplace. The light flickers, creating the appearance that it’s from the fire. It makes the fireplace look more realistic.

Using the remote control, you can customize the 360o LED lights. You can set them to one of two colors: yellow or white. You can also choose from one of two effects: flickering or solid.

There is also the option of changing the log and flame brightness. There are four brightness levels.

So you can brighten the fireplace during the day when there is more light getting into the house and dim it when it gets dark.

Supplemental Heat

The Dimplex Revillusion electric fireplace insert comes with an integrated ceramic heater with a capacity of around 5,000 BTUs.

It produces enough heat for a small to medium size room (400-450 square feet max). A fan ensures the heat is spread evenly across the room. Unlike some heater-integrated inserts, you don’t have to sit directly in front of the fireplace to enjoy the warmth.

There is no thermostat to regulate the temperature but there are two heat level settings: one high and one low. The fireplace defaults to the low setting when you switch on the heat function. Press the heat button again on the remote control to set it to high.

Note that you can control the heat settings and turn it on/off independently from the flame and log effects settings.

This ensures you can enjoy the fireplace all-year-round.

Installation

One major advantage of electric fireplace inserts compared to traditional ones is the ease of installation. You don’t need any venting or special fittings.

The Dimplex Revillusion is a plug-in log insert which means you don’t even need to hardwire it. Just plug it into the nearest 120V 15 Amp outlet and you are good to go.

The insert draws 12.5 A. Before plugging it in, check that the outlet can handle the amperage draw. You may want to use an outlet with a dedicated circuit to prevent an overload.

Do not plug the insert into an extension or power strip.

The manufacturer recommends installation in a fireplace that is at least 26” wide, 22” high and 15” deep.

The insert itself measures 25.6” wide, 19” high, and 13” deep.

Concerns

  • Several customers say they are having trouble using the remote. You have to get very close to the insert for it to respond. But at least the fireplace has a control panel which you can use instead of the remote control.
  • There is no timer setting. The insert will waste a lot of energy if you forget to turn off the heat before you sleep or leave for work especially if you’d turned the heat on.
  • No sound effects. But you can easily add these yourself using a third party fire crackler system. Comfort Smart is one of the best.
  • The Plexiglas backdrop can sometimes reflect light from a lamp in the room, causing an unpleasant glare. Dimplex has made it partially frosted to avoid reflections but you still need to be careful how you position lights inside the room.
